On behalf of the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD), San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association Local 624, SAFD Occupational Cancer Committee, and the Fire Training Academy (FTA), we want to warmly welcome you to our 2026 Annual Wellness Fair and Cancer Prevention Screening, hosted by the FTA, which began in 2023. We appreciate you taking the time to help care for our firefighters and help protect them from cancer!

• January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month 

• Cancer is the #1 killer of firefighters

• Heart disease and heart attacks are the #2 killers of firefighters

• Mental health including PTSD, anxiety, and depression are the #3 killers of firefighters

• 60% of firefighter line of duty deaths are due to cancer

• Firefighters are at a 9% greater risk of getting cancer and 14% greater risk of dying  from cancer than the general population 

• Firefighting is a known human carcinogen (International Agency of Research on Cancer)
